GAMBIA ABOLISHES CHILD MARRIAGE

Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh told lawmakers to implement laws to ban girls 18 years and below from getting married.

President Yayha Jammeh said that any culprit found would be jailed for up to 20 years.

“Speaking at the Eid-u-Fitr celebrations at the end of Ramadan, President Jammeh said parents and imams who perform the ceremonies would also face prison,” BBC reported.

According to the UN children’s agency, about 46% of Gambian girls get married before turning 18 years.
