Rift Valley Railways (RVR) has received 120 new heavy-duty railway wagons aimed to increase haulage capacity.
RVR officials said that the Sh5.41 million heavy-duty wagons received on Saturday at the port of Mombasa align with the operator’s plans to acquire 480-railway wagons to increase its haulage capacity to fifty percent.
The Chief Executive Officer, Carlos Andrade said that the wagon bought from China will enable the RVR convey 60 tons on each wagon per trip as compared to the current 4o tons on each wagon per trip.
“Currently, rail transport accounts for less than five percent of cargo transport from the port of Mombasa in Kenya,” reported Benard Sanga.
“The arrival of the new wagons comes at a point the Government is working tirelessly to complete the construction of the standard gauge railway line,” he noted also.
